I live in Los Angeles, and on Friday there was news that a fishing boat 3 miles off the coast of Venice Beach, CA saw a massive great white shark. Pretty cool, if you ask me, but the local news coverage of it was rather silly.
Reporter: Does it scare you when you’re out there swimmin’?
Small girl: No.
And is it just me, or does she seem disappointed that only one person in Los Angeles County has ever been killed by a shark? “I guess that’s good news.” Sigh. Reporters: they only like high body counts.
While such an enormous great white is indeed an impressive sighting, and maybe even newsworthy, these newspeople seem to think it’s news that there was a shark at all. My thoughts on this:
Also, environmentalists want great white sharks to be put on the endangered species list; they are not “thriving.” Get it together.
